大三修的〈閱聽人分析〉應該是我六十歲都忘不了的可怕研究課,猶記曼蘋老師上課時一再強調:「做研究就是站在巨人肩膀上」,課程末了寫了亂七八糟的研究報告被老師罵翻:

「你們這個研究一點意義都沒有,便宜行事,浪費你們自己的時間,還浪費我的聽你報告的時間!」下課鐘響,兩個呆若木雞的學生眼神空洞,老師大喊「sloppily!!下課。」頭也不回。

我想這是大學後不想念研究所的主因。現在雖然是course work課程,殊不知還是踏上學術的窄路,迷失在google scholar裡的篇章,reference如漩渦把英文字彙與概念如攪拌機的混和均勻,翻閱語言的困囿抽取意念。

做研究,未免太寂寞。






"Standing on the shoulders of giants." --Isaac Newton (尼克好厲害啊~)

"What Descartes did was a good step. You have added much several ways, and especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

不過這句話不是牛頓原創,出於1159年以拉丁文寫成的"Metalogicon",翻譯為英文如下:

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours."




站在巨人的肩膀上,一不小心就摔死了。
